What is the Emotional Dashboard story tactic?

We feel good when things go our way, bad when they don't. Emotions are hazard indicators for your project.

How does it feel when you're working on a really vague brief? How does it feel when you turn up an awesome fact in your research? Every stage of your innovation process has practical steps, it also has a range of emotions. Listen to your team's stories about the project. Use the emotion to find the problem.

Tip: the emotions you experience during the project also make great teachable moments to tell once the work is finished.

 

ℹ️ Remember: story is everywhere.

When you tell stories, people pay attention, and most importantly - stories are never forgotten. 

The opportunities for using Storyteller Tactics in your work are endless. From emails, pitches, job interviews, or show and tells.

There's no right or wrong way to use them. Experiment and play. You'll find what works best for you.

How to use Emotional Dashboard

1. Set out your project on a timeline. If it's a design project, try plotting it on the  Double Diamond.

2. Either on your own, or with your team, identify emotions felt at each stage - and describe the moment that caused the emotion. Don't shy away from negative emotions, they are very useful.

Discover: question the challenge, research user needs and experiences.

  • Positive: enthusiasm about the challenge; curiosity; delight at finding an insight in the research
  • Negative: unhappiness about the problem; boredom; unease about the data coming back.

Define: make sense of the findings, create your design brief.

  • Positive: satisfaction that things make sense; pleasure of working on a good brief.
  • Negative: fear that nothing is making sense; pain of working on a confused brief.

Develop: come up with multiple potential solutions, test and refine them.

  • Positive: playfulness coming up with new ideas; joy that things are working well.
  • Negative: irritation at unrealistic ideas; frustration that things are working badly.

Deliver: pick your best solution, prepare to launch.

  • Positive: pride in valuable work; "I love my job!"
  • Negative: shame in worthless work; "My job sucks."

 

3. Finally, look for moments where you've gone from positive to negative emotional states (or vice versa). These emotional rollercoasters make for the best stories.
